TOUCHING tales of high-level care at the hospice helped spur on cyclists in yesterday's Rock to Rocque Bike Ride.

Around 1,000 were expected to take part in the annual round-island challenge, in aid of Les Bourgs Hospice, and many had personal experience of the excellent support and dedicated care it offers.

Lesley Johnson had a 50th birthday the night before with friends and family and had asked for donations rather than birthday gifts.

She raised about £190, with some of it coming from colleagues. She said the hospice provided brilliant care for her mother before she passed away two-and-a-half years ago.

'They were excellent,' she said. 'They were very good with Mum, they gave her all the time she needed.'

Sam Rouxel, owner of Adventure Cycles, was part of a team on a specially designed four-seater bike called the Dominator, built by Pete Levy.

He said this was a new and improved model following their previous ride on a six-seater called the Liberator, and saw them zip along the flats at up 20mph.

Mr Rouxel said the hospice had cared for his late mother, who had cancer.

'They looked after her right to the end. They were brilliant. It's nice to give something back to them.'
