Dr Ruth Swainston, of Queen's Road Medical Practice, has been nominated for the Angel of the Year Award, sponsored by Ravenscroft.

The patient who nominated her, who has asked to remain anonymous, said they would not have made it this far without Dr Swainston's support.

'I've had two years with severe depression and, despite many difficulties with my illness, medication and attempted treatment via the Mental Health Service, Ruth has been exceptional in every manner of interaction, follow-up, support, encouragement, empathy, respect, sincerity, compassion and, most importantly, her relentless and genuine reiteration to me that she believes in my eventual wellness.

'This has been of enormous help in reminding me that I will recover and get the MHS I need and deserve.

'There's only "when" and not "ifs" with Ruth and this faith in me continues to help me remember I do have an inner strength (somewhere) to hold on.'

The patient would have long forgotten this were it not for Dr Swainston going well beyond her duties and responsibilities as a 'regular GP'.

'It's well known an awful lot of stigma exists about mental illness and waiting the typical several months from a GP referral to initial MHS consultation is pain-staking enough, however, Ruth has been nothing less than relentless in providing me with reassurance and insistence that I will get the help to enable my recovery.

'In over 40 years of seeing GPs/medical professionals for any ailment, I've never experienced another (in any health field) who even comes close to the outstanding contribution and delivery this lady has provided.

'I truly hope my honesty demonstrates this lady's impeccable professionalism that's enabled me to cope with all the unforeseen treatment delays and problems related thereto.'
