Mrs De Sousa, who has been nominated for the Garenne-sponsored Teacher of the Year Award, 'really takes the time to understand her pupils as individuals,' said parent Nikki Renouf, who described how her daughter's teacher 'has worked tirelessly to think of different strategies to help her' around difficulties she had been experiencing at school.

Throughout this she said that Mrs De Sousa had kept her up to date with her daughter's progress.

'She kept me included and informed so I felt that we were working as a team.'

Pupil Enzo Crowson, 9, also elaborated on how Mrs De Sousa had kept his mother notified when he had bad mornings at school. And after breaking his arm last May, Enzo said his Year 3 teacher went above and beyond to make sure he got back up to speed at school.

'Mrs De Sousa helped me so much when I returned, she kept me in at break and lunch and made sure I was OK.'

And when his cast came off at school, Mrs De Sousa made sure his mother did not miss out on the moment.

'After eight weeks my cast came off; the class cheered, we had a little cake break and Mrs De Sousa emailed photos to my mum.'

'Mrs De Sousa is a lovely, caring, kind and considerate teacher,' he said.
