Assistant principal (Sixth Form) Charlie Cottam nominated Year 13 student TJ Fitzgerald for the Butterfield-sponsored award.

TJ has held the charities prefect role this academic year.

'He threw himself into this role wholeheartedly, organising four house charity days to support the migrant crisis appeal and the Tumaini Fund, and five whole-school charity days for he the Tumaini Fund, Children in Need, a Christmas sweater day for Jonah Gillingham, Sports Relief and Lepra,' Mr Cottam said.

'In school assemblies before these events, he displayed a true sense of compassion and understanding of the needs of others which he communicated to the school in a direct and appealing way.'

Money was also raised for the Swimarathon, Poppy Appeal, a boys' home in Thailand and the Red Cross, all of which fell under his remit.

Another student, Sam O'Neill, set up a fund to pay for the education of a child in a village in Kenya with which the college has links through an annual trip.

TJ helped Sam with the fundraising and the college more than met the £2,300 needed.

'In total, TJ has overseen the raising of £12,400 by the college upper school students this academic year, a record by over £3,000.'

TJ has also found time to excel academically and has been offered a place at Oxford University to study geography, subject to his A-level results. 'This is a remarkable achievement which we feel makes him thoroughly deserving of this award,' Mr Cottam said.

He also achieved 12 A* grades at GCSE.
