Pride of Guernsey - 'our guardian angel forever'
CRADLING her six-week-old baby boy as he went blue through lack of breathing, Helen O'Hara had never needed a 'guardian angel' more.
Mrs O'Hara had been in Town one day in July when suddenly she noticed her little boy, Fletch, had stopped breathing.
Panicking and not knowing what to do, Mrs O'Hara came across off-duty nurse Lollie McLean, who spotted something was wrong.
Going to the child's aid, Mrs McClean saved Fletch's life. And for that, she has been nominated for the Angel of the Year Award, sponsored by Ravenscroft.
'Our angel forever is called Lollie,' said Mrs O'Hara.
'One July day – the worst day of my life – our little boy, who was six weeks old at the time, stopped breathing while we were out in Town. I panicked and he went blue.
'Lollie was just a few metres away, she realised there was something wrong.
'She ran over took my little boy out of my arms, laid him on the floor and did CPR on him.'
Mrs McLean had her own 18-month-old daughter with her at the time but she turned her around so the child could not see what was happening.
She managed to keep her daughter calm while she was breathing for Fletch.
'If it wasn't for this fantastic lady, things would be so much different.
'Our little boy still has medical conditions, but if it wasn't for her quick actions, he may not be here today.
'She is our guardian angel that day and forever, we love her.'
