Two down, five to go, for multi-marathon man Mike
A 51-YEAR-OLD father of four has begun the challenge of a lifetime – running the equivalent of seven marathons in seven days as he competes in the Gobi March.
Mike Read, who is doing the challenge in a bid to raise money and awareness of cystic fibrosis, is now in his second stage of the 250km course.
While the first day was 'so far, so good', the second was a 'tough' climb in sleet and rain over a mountain, he said.
'Chilly start in the mountains but warmed up enough that it was a good temp to run in,' Mr Read said in a blog post.
'Ran most of it to the half-way mark then walked a lot more, particularly after some huge sand dunes.
'Weight of back pack and altitude definitely getting to me and most others.'
Mr Read said he was pleased to finish the first stage in 38th place in about five hours 37 minutes.
Stage two had been hard, as predicted, but he had managed to finish 28th in five hours 57 minutes.
