Pride of Guernsey: 'Selflessly devoted'
A MUM who looks after her teenage son, who has a rare chromosome disorder and severe developmental delay, has been nominated for the Specsavers-sponsored Carer of the Year Award.
Jan Aslett has to fit looking after 17-year-old son Jack Birch around her job.
Jack is non-verbal, is fed through his tummy button and needs round the clock care.
'I'm a single mum and caring for Jack can be a challenge,' Jan said.
'But I wouldn't be without him.'
Jan was nominated by her friend, Wendy Beaven, who said that Jan managed to care for her son, with very little support.
'She has selflessly devoted her life to caring for Jack, as well as giving much support to others with special needs children,' Wendy said.
'Jan is caring, loving and supportive, and always smiling, despite her personal problems.'
