Pride of Guernsey: 'Best friend and role model'
A ROLE model, a best friend and an example to us all are some of Gregory Zimmerman's feelings towards his father, Colin Leighton, 53.
Colin's wife has been terminally ill for some time and he has taken time away from work to care for her.
Gregory nominated his father for the Christies Group-sponsored Parent/s of the Year award.
He said his father's patience was outstanding. The amount of time that he afforded other people never ceased to amaze him despite what life had thrown at him.
Colin's own mother has died within the last 18 months but his zest for life, humility and humbleness have never waned.
'Any time I need some advice, he is honest and always on hand despite his own sometimes hectic life, and he never judges people,' Gregory said.
'My own children cannot wait to see grandad and when they leave they talk about how much fun they have had in his company.
'If I can pass on half the life skills and knowledge, but mainly caring nature, to them that he has taught me they will have a very good start in life in how to deal with people in times of adversity.
'He is my best friend and my role model.'
