Pride of Guernsey: 'she has turned her life around'
A TEENAGER who suffered from low self-esteem and anxiety, missing nearly a year of school, has turned her life around and volunteered for the Youth Commission.
Millie Bourgaize, 16, was nominated by her mum, Kerry, for the College of Further Education-sponsored Overcoming Adversity award.
'I would like her and everyone who knows her to know how proud of her I am,' she said.
'From being bullied in her early years at secondary school she became withdrawn, suffering from low mood, low self-esteem and anxiety, which led her to become a school refuser. She missed nearly a year of school during this terrible time.
'She was introduced to the "quiet club" run by the Youth Commission, which was the beginning of the turnaround for her, giving her the confidence to push through the difficult times.'
Mrs Bourgaize said Millie now volunteers with the Youth Ccommission and did a speech and interview on live radio to promote good body image in young people.
She did her GCSEs and hoped to work with young people so she can help others in the way she has been helped and supported.
'She has turned what was a very difficult and emotional few years into a positive outcome, of which I am very, very proud.'
