Guernsey Coastguard received a call from local fishing vessel Asile Sur at 6.25am, who reported seeing a yacht with its sails up on Brehon Tower.

With no crew members visible, the St Peter Port lifeboat was sent out and found one crew member on board the yacht Marutea.

Guernsey Harbour master Captain Chad Murray said they had received no contact from the yacht prior to that point.

'We received a call from a fishing vessel just before 6.30am, which said there was a yacht stranded on the northern side of Brehon Tower,' he said. 'We'd had no contact from the boat at that point and so decided to launch the St Peter Port lifeboat to ascertain more details as to what had happened.'

With no apparent danger and with the yacht owner reluctant to leave his boat, the lifeboat was recalled after it first attended to the yacht.

'There was one individual on board who was unwilling to leave the yacht,' he said.
