Husband recreates first anniversary for pearl celebration

CELEBRATING their first wedding anniversary on the Weighbridge Roundabout clearly drove one couple in the right direction for life as now, three decades later, they have marked it in the same spot.

Ady Gallienne, 54, and his wife Tracey, 52, tied the knot at St Joseph's Church on 2 August 1986 and had a reception at the Trelade Hotel.

But it was not until the couple celebrated their one-year anniversary that Mr Gallienne, a builder, wanted to 'do something different'.

At the time he was fitting out the former Simply Island restaurant and, instead of getting paid, he asked the owner to cook a meal for him and his wife.

Unbeknown to Mrs Gallienne, she was also taken to the Ship & Crown, before being blindfolded and taken across to the Weighbridge roundabout, which had just been completed.

When she took the blindfold off she was greeted by champagne and a meal.

'Cars were going past us and hooting,' Mr Gallienne said.

'Someone asked me what I was going to do for our first anniversary and I knew I just wanted to do something different. The police at the time said we were not allowed to do it but a police car drove past us and didn't do anything.'
