Local swimmers celebrate GB team's Olympic wins
LOCAL competitive swimmers have been celebrating the success of their Great British counterparts in the Rio Olympics.
British swimmer Adam Peaty broke his own world record to win gold in the 100m breaststroke, while Jazz Carlin won silver in the 400m freestyle.
Local swimmer Luke Belton has now retired from competitive swimming to focus on studying for a masters in engineering geology.
But in 2014 he competed against Adam Peaty at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Mr Belton, who currently holds the island record in the 50 and 100m breaststroke, said he remembers racing against Adam well.
'2014 was obviously his breakthrough year and I remember following him as his times dropped from the Commonwealth trials through to when he won gold in Glasgow and later that summer in the European Championships,' he said.
'It was very clear that he could go on to do something special.'
