La Mare science labs made safe after holiday repairs
SCIENCE labs at La Mare de Carteret High School are now fully compliant with gas and electrical standards and are safe for students to use, the head of the education development programme has said.
Ashley Dupre gave the reassurance as maintenance work was being completed at the high and primary schools in time for the start of the new term next week.
The Health and Safety Executive issued three prohibition notices relating to gas and electrical supplies in July after the labs were deemed unsafe and posed a risk of causing serious personal injury.
Over the summer, Mr Dupre said the four science labs had undergone a lot of change.
Previously, the wooden tables to which the gas taps and pipes were connected were fixed to the ground.
The fittings were loose which led to the prohibition notices being issued.
The tables have since been unfixed and the taps and pipes moved to the wooden surface around the perimeter of the class.
'It also makes the classroom a lot more flexible now because the tables can be used for any subject,' Mr Dupre said.
'We have also completely re-wired the electrics in the room because it was about 40 years old and installed a gas guard.
'Everything is now completely compliant and safe to use.'
