Melrose gazebo classroom a breath of fresh air for pupils

MELROSE pupils are celebrating the arrival of a new outdoor play area and outdoor classroom thanks to a huge fundraising effort.

The school's PTA organised a series of events to help raise money for the development and it reached its £30,000 target.

The refurbished area includes different play equipment plus a covered gazebo which can seat up to 30 and can be used as an outdoor classroom.

Melrose head teacher Elaine Ozanne said it promotes outdoor learning.

'Now we can be out in all weathers,' she said.

Mrs Ozanne said the girls would be fully involved in further developing the 'nature area', where shrubs and heathers will be some of the plants put in, and will use the new area to support the Forest Schools Outdoor Learning Programme and cross-curricular outdoor learning that happens throughout the school.

Various contractors on and off-island were consulted and Guernsey Gardens was selected, the school said.

Its Easigrass product has been used in other local school playgrounds to great effect, the school said, so it thought it was a good solution to its original wood chips play area.

'The surface is safe, secure and all-weather,' PTA chairman John Bracegirdle said.
