Shane Connolly, 30, admitted charges of dangerous driving, committing doing an act intended to pervert the course of justice, and failing to surrender to police bail.

Sentencing in the Magistrate's Court, Judge Graeme Mc- Kerrell said that it had also been an aggravating factor that Connolly has put pressure on his partner to make a false statement to police on his behalf.

It was accepted that the decision would cause great hardship on the defendant and his family, but he only had himself to blame.

While he also accepted that the defendant had panicked, he had lied to police and shown a lack of integrity.

His behaviour was 'unforgivable'.
