A longer school day and shorter summer hols
EDUCATION will investigate extending the school day and shortening the summer holidays.
Both ideas are included in its policy letter on secondary education and were also raised at the Scrutiny public hearing earlier this week.
Education, Sport & Culture president Paul Le Pelley said the idea – put forward in August as one of the 'priorities and areas of focus' – had not yet made it off the drawing board.
'The ideas of changing school terms and school days were ideas that were put forward for discussion during an 'away day' that the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture had some time ago. They have not, as yet, been progressed further.
'If and when they are discussed further the views of the teachers associations, parents, students and members of the public will have to be ascertained and taken into consideration.'
Restructured school days were among six priorities.
