The Alderney Wildlife Trust has been fundraising to work towards this goal, and has so far bought two of the new tags.
Claire Thorpe, people and wildlife officer for the trust, said the old tags lasted only six weeks.
'The trust could not collect data on the birds in the winter months or during the migration season because of the short-term tags,' she said.
'However, the new, longer lasting tags will allow the birds to be released and then caught again the following year.'
