The steer, called Big Moo, who lives in Glencoe, Australia, has gained fame across the region due to his massive size, measuring around 190cm at his withers.

While owner Joanne Vine said casual observers often found Big Moo's enormous frame a bit daunting, she said the seven-year-old was extremely gentle and 'part of the family'.

Bill Luff, vice-president of the Royal Guernsey Agricultural & Horticultural Society, said that a larger-than-average Guernsey was not unprecedented, examples go back almost 200 years.

'Unusually large Guernsey cattle have appeared from time to time, and there are two well-known instances from the past,' he said. 'A Guernsey ox, whose picture was published in the London press, was awarded a first prize at the Christmas show on the island in 1844. The animal scaled 1,289lbs and produced 1,51lbs of suet.

'While in 1840, the celebrated Alderney bull, Hector, was allowed by the judges to be the most beautiful of his breed ever imported for symmetry, justness of his points and aptitude to fatten.'
