Future of Town's Christmas lights and Santa switch-on under threat

THERE will be no more Christmas lights or Santa 'switch-on' in Town if support cannot come from the States or elsewhere in the future, the charity's new chairwoman has warned.

Jacquie Robin will hand over a letter to Economic Development next week asking if it can help with the future of the lights, after a vote at a St Peter Port parish emergency meeting on Wednesday night, (2 nov) for it to no longer be responsible for the lights after 2016.

Without the lights, Mrs Robin said that those who drive through to Town just to see the Christmas lights would no longer be able to do so.

'It changes the whole thing. We wouldn't have as many Christmas parties in Town. People come in for the festive atmosphere.

'Late-night shopping may really suffer,' she said.

She also thought that every child deserved to see a Santa 'switch-on'. Mrs Robin said All fundraising events planned would continue, said Mrs Robin, with all money raised this year going towards the 2016 lights and any deficit being borne by the parish.

The St Peter Port Christmas Lights charity will be in the OSA pop-up shop next week, 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, and 9am-2pm on Saturday. Applications for lottery grants open at the start of December.
