School wants to clear and use bunker

A LARGE German bunker could soon become a focus of learning, as part of La Houguette Primary School's 40th birthday celebrations.

The bunker, under the hill behind the school, was reopened in the late 1990s when the gun pit was made into a performance amphitheatre. But the interior has just been used as storage, until now.

Head teacher Richard Fyfe said the school needed someone to provide skips and volunteers with time to clear out the tunnels.

'The big job is clearing the bunker,' he said.

'We want to try and get businesses to help, with funding and with time.'

The tunnels and rooms are filled with filing cabinets, desk trays, old netball hoops and bits of desks. One room is floor to ceiling with pieces of metal.

Mr Fyfe said if anyone wanted the scrap metal, they were welcome to take it away.

Anyone wanting to sponsor a skip or put together a working party can get in touch with the school by emailing office@
