Under the proposals, which were first revealed in 2014, the fabric of the tower, which is one of 15 pre-Martello towers, would be conserved and repaired before it is converted into a short-term visitor rental for two people.

A wet room with a shower, basin and toilet would be installed in the basement, a kitchenette with dining and storage space on the ground floor and a bedroom/living area on the first floor.

Guests would also be able to take in the views of the bay from the top of the tower, which originally served as a firing deck and lookout position.

In its application letter, CCD Architects, on behalf of the National Trust, said the works, wherever possible, would retain all aspects of the historic building.

A small access route via a new walkway fixed to the outside and suitable glazing of the windows would be the only externally visible alterations.
