But even if funding is approved, work is unlikely to start until 2018, with a new school opening in 2021.

Next week the matter is set to be discussed as part of the selection debate and the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture hopes to bring proposals for the education estate to the Assembly for approval in June or July 2017.

These plans were submitted in February, before the scheme was put on hold by the States in March, and, despite concerns over motorcycle parking and noise from the enlarged school, the planners have given permission.

The planners said that the project had been designed by experienced architects who had incorporated successful elements of the Les Beaucamps High design into this new build.

'The scheme is arranged around courtyards, creates outdoor teaching spaces and provides rhythm, scale, layering and modelling to reduce the mass of the buildings and increase their attraction,' the planners wrote in the report.

'Careful choice of materials, respecting the character of the area, adds further interest.

'The buildings are based around the pond, with smaller buildings linking the two schools.'
