De Putron Challenge: Castel are Year 6 champions with sudden-death success
CASTEL School's Year 6 team achieved a narrow victory in the De Putron Challenge's inter-island finals for 2016, after fighting tooth and nail on their way through the rounds.
The 10th anniversary event saw Hayley de Putron, trustee of the challenge's sponsor, the Ana Leaf Foundation, carrying the message that 'it is cool to be clever' and praised the success of the teams in their respective islands, saying they were 'made up of the future of both islands'.
The audience found themselves on the edge of their seats for the first event of the day, with the Guernsey team eventually beating De La Salle Primary from Jersey in a tie-breaker.
George Walker, Millie Hunt and Pierce Gorman made up the team for Castel, with Charlotte Duquemin in reserve. Following the trend from the heats, George led the way for his team.
The Year 8 competition saw one of the more back and forth scorelines. Compared to the Year 6 event, the older pupils had tighter rules which saw them lose points if they answered incorrectly, therefore more caution was exercised by both teams.
Despite the difference in rules, the trend of Guernsey winning continued, and the Elizabeth College team, which consisted of Edmund Hartley, Euan Simmonds, Sam Heathcote and reserve Peter Birch, secured the trophy by a point.
The post-16 final was the most complex of the events which took place at the inter-insular finals.
It pitched two teams from each island against each other in a four-way battle, before the top two from the initial heat fought for the trophy.
Acclaimed as the top minds of the Channel Islands, and future States' members of both Guernsey and Jersey, the day saw Jersey dominate the Guernsey teams, with Elizabeth College and The Ladies' College defeated in the first heat.
