'Move with the times to survive'
RETAILERS outside of Town have reported they are still doing well, despite several St Peter Port shops closing.
The internet and the cost of rent is being blamed on a number of long-standing shops shutting their doors both in Town and on the Bridge.
Pete Norman, owner of Freedom Surf Shop at L'Islet, said shops could still survive and thrive, they just needed to move into the 21st century and keep up to date.
'None of the shops closing in Town have updated their stock – I don't think they have moved with the times and invested in their appearance. You need to modernise to survive,' he said.
'Particularly with clothing, it is something where people want to touch and feel and try things on.'
Mr Norman thought being outside Town was a benefit to him.
'The footfall is higher there, but most people are just looking around and browsing,' he said. 'We are a destination shop.'
