The fundraising initiative is organised as part of the Rotary Club's End Polio Now campaign.

Queen's Road Medical Practice was one of those organisations supporting the cause.

Assistant practice manager Mandy Regan said it had held fundraising events for Purple Pinkie Day for many years.

'We have a mufti day and try to wear something purple or pink,' Ms Regan said.

Ms Regan said it took part because it tied in with its medical links.

Health & Social Care held a cake sale, with staff also wearing purple or pink, at its Le Vauquiedor headquarters.

'We do fundraising throughout the year and this is one of the causes we support,' receptionist and administration assistant Sue Le Page said.

'We always try to support a cause that is health-related either local or choose one of the national ones.'

Yesterday staff dressed in purple or pink and they also had balloons.

She said last year it raised £82 from its Purple Pinkie cake sale and it hoped to raise a similar amount this year.

Polio immunisation drops cost 20p per dose. Rotarians Paul and Jannine Birtwistle are helping with a National Immunisation Day in India again this year, when more than 170 million children receive the life-saving drops in one day.

Thanks to the Guernsey Overseas Aid & Development Commission, every £1 is doubled to £2, then the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation trebles it, so £1 becomes £6.

To donate, send cheques payable to Rotary Club of Guernsey – End Polio Now to Mrs Birtwistle, Gainsborough Lodge, La Rue du Gains, St Peter's, GY7 9BS. Or donations can be paid into the campaign's account at HSBC, sort code 40 22 25, account number 841 065 71.
