The two-year-old shih tzu was being walked on L'Ancresse Common by friends of Miss Gordon's on Sunday when she was spooked by a bigger dog and ran off.

It sparked an intensive search involving scores of islanders, plus many more on Facebook, as well as in the media and the GSPCA.

The search came to an end shortly before 6pm on Monday when Phoebe was caught and returned to her relieved and delighted owner.

Speaking at home yesterday, Miss Gordon said that she had searched until midnight on Sunday and after a sleepless night was back on the common at 5am Monday hoping to catch sight of Phoebe.

It was only after someone called the GSPCA on Monday afternoon that the search narrowed down to an area between the L'Ancresse road and Le Grand Marais.
