Ladies' College team runners-up in UK science fair

SCREAMS of excitement were heard from Ladies' College students as they were named runners-up, beating rivals from all over the country, in the Big Bank UK Young Scientists & Engineers Fair, beating rivals from all over the country.

It is also thought they were the first students from the Channel Islands to reach this final.

Year 11 students Molly Simpson and Amelia Bridel, both 16, and Year 9 pupil Eden Latter, 14, made up Team Sea Shells.

They tested how much calcium carbonate was in sea shells and how that changed its colour, then used this research to form an experiment into removing carbon dioxide from breath.

The girls, who were in the intermediate category, were finished second in the final award ceremony of the event, which took place at the NEC in Birmingham.

The other teams were in the junior category – the Crystal Project, which was made up of Year 9 students Celeste Chandler and Amandine Harris, both 14, and Esme Barrett, 13, where they made large crystals using simple products.
