A NEW phone app has been launched to help people report sightings of the Asian hornet, an invasive species that attacks honey bees.

The app, called Asian Hornet Watch, has been released with the intention of stopping the hornets nesting in the UK and the British Isles.

Two nests were found in Alderney last year, and have since been destroyed, however, there is concern queens could have been produced from the nest and currently be in hibernation.

In the UK, a nest was found in Tetbury and beekeepers have been on high alert.

Alderney beekeeper Roy Burgess said the app sounded like a great idea.

'It sounds really good and I fully support it,' he said.
