AROUND 250 bikes will be on their way to England this week, before going to Africa, after being donated by islanders.

Since 2013, The Eleanor Foundation has been sending bikes donated by islanders to the Colchester-based charity Re-Cycle, Bikes for Africa, for onward shipment.

Bikes for Africa currently works in Ghana, Namibia, South Africa, Malawi, Zambia and Kenya.

This week the Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service assisted in loading the bikes into a container, ready to be shipped to Poole.

Terry Iles, who is Bikes for Africa joint co-ordinator with Mike Webber, thanked the firefighters.

'They were magnificent,' he said.

Mr Iles also thanked Adventure Cycles.

'They helped prepare the bikes for sending away.'

As part of the preparations to go in the container, the pedals need to be taken off and the handlebars put parallel to the frame.

Mr Iles also expressed his appreciation of Bruno Kay-Mouat, from Channel Seaways and Alderney Shipping, for providing containers and taking them to England.

He said the bikes would make a big difference to those in Africa.

To donate a bike, call Mr Iles on 263854 or email terryiles@cwgsy.net.
