The new fares are due to come into effect next month and while a new cheaper fare is part of the three tiers being brought in, the middle option, which includes hold baggage, will be higher than the current lowest fare. The highest option will be the same as the current flexible fare.

The airline said the new structure would mean more lower fares would be available overall and the aim was to encourage more travel to and from the island. It hopes to see up to 30,000 extra (single) passengers journeys each year as a result. But many islanders saw the new fare structure as simply a way to charge extra for hold baggage and took to the internet to make their feelings known.
