St Saviour’s to demand fair deal on rectory cost

ST SAVIOUR’S is preparing to dig its heels in over paying to house a rector shared with other parishes unless a ‘fair financial arrangement’ is put in place.

The parish is in plurality with Torteval, under which arrangement they share the same rector, who lives in the St Saviour’s rectory.

But while St Saviour’s has to bear the cost of maintaining the building, Torteval pays nothing.

The situation came to a head at a meeting of St Saviour’s douzaine where it was decided to write to the Guernsey Deanery to explain that when the Rev. Mark Charmley leaves St Saviour’s, ‘the parish will not welcome a replacement rector into St Saviour’s Rectory unless there is a fair financial arrangement in place with other parishes in plurality’.

A letter is being prepared and is expected to be put before the douzaine at its meeting this month.

Torteval’s rectory has been let as flats for nearly 30 years, and the money raised from rent has been put towards the upkeep of the church.
