Tributes to Ernie: ‘the bravest kid I ever met’

‘AN INSPIRATION’ was how many people described Ernie Backlund-Leale yesterday, as tributes were paid to the 12-year-old who has lost his long battle with leukaemia.

Ernie’s failing health inspired him to keep busy ticking items off his bucket list of things to do, and, as a result, he came into contact with many islanders and organisations, all of whom were sad to hear that he had died on Sunday.

Among the items on Ernie’s list was getting a trip on the lifeboat and he fulfilled that in May when he was taken out on an exercise aboard the Spirit of Guernsey.

‘He was the bravest little kid I’ve ever met,’ said lifeboat coxswain Buz White.
