‘Short breaks need cheaper flight deals’

AURIGNY’S new fare structure could be bad for tourism, according to the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce tourism sub-group.

While Chamber as a whole gave a cautious welcome to the fares from the point of view of businesses looking for flights to the UK, Luke Wheadon was concerned that travel to the island could be badly affected.

The lowest-tier fare is a cheaper hold-luggage-free option but Mr Wheadon said while this could benefit the short-break market, travel to the island is not getting the most out of this sector currently.

‘Short-break destinations are last-minute things, on a whim, and Guernsey is not geared up for that at all,’ he said.

‘The issue we have is that the closer you are booking to departure time, the more expensive it is.’

If cheaper last-minute bookings were available he thought more people would look to take advantage and thus boost the market for those who wanted to get a cheap holiday and travel light.

‘I would like to see things geared up much more towards short breaks in the island,’ he said.
