‘Ernie, we will miss your smile and your bravery’

EVERY pew was filled and every chair taken at St Joseph’s Church yesterday, as friends and family came out to say farewell to Ernie Backlund-Leale.

The 12-year-old died on Sunday after a long battle with leukaemia. But despite his illness he was always making new friends, as he worked his way through a large bucket list of adventures.

Among the mourners was the Guernsey FC team. Ernie had been a big fan of the club and the club mascot, Roary the Lion, sent a special message to the congregation.

‘You are an inspirational kid, no matter what you went through, you always smiled, laughed and made others laugh with you.’
