Compromise amendment secures college funding

A TRANSITIONAL college funding amendment, which was described as a ‘classic Guernsey compromise’ and ‘the least worst option’ in some quarters, has been approved.

Deputy Shane Langlois’ amendment will see States funding increase incrementally from 2019 to a maximum of £2.15m. a year until special placeholder terms expire seven years later.

Between 2019 and 2026, it will see up to £20.1m paid to the three colleges (including the special placeholders) compared to the £16.4m proposed by Education.

At this point a review will be conducted as to whether to continue the funding given that all special placeholder terms will have expired.

The funding resolution was accepted by Education president Paul Le Pelley, and was generally seen as the ‘best option in the circumstances’.

It was approved 25 votes to 12.
