Committees clash over population law changes

AN EFFORT to overturn parts of the Population Management Law that have caused problems for the hospitality sector will be made by Economic Development next month.

But Home Affairs is also looking at making changes, and Economic Development’s move has been labelled ‘disappointing on many levels’ by Home president Mary Lowe. She said that the department was not following the ‘well-understood process of consultation’ and letting businesses engage with the Population Employment Advisory Panel.

She said one of the department’s proposals ‘would drive a coach and horses’ through the law and would in effect create an open doors policy.

In a release issued yesterday, Economic Development said it will be looking to have three key areas changed immediately.

It said that it had been approached by hospitality sector representatives concerned at the difficulty they have had attracting and retaining skilled staff since the law came into effect in April.

Committee member Jennifer Merrett said that some businesses had been forced to close on certain days due to staff shortages.
