‘Students lead the way on PE improvements’

IMPROVEMENTS are being made in all aspects of physical education, La Mare de Carteret High head of PE Seoirse Lee has said.

Mr Lee was speaking following Dr Simon Sebire’s talk at the Be Active Forum, where he said that more needs to be done to get young girls doing more physical activity in their daily lives.

‘We identified the disparity, not just this year but a few years ago, and there was not a similar gap between the boys and girls taking part in extra-curricular activities which we’ve tried to address through various ways,’ said Mr Lee.

‘One of the ways we do that is through drop-in clubs, so if they want to go walking on the nature trail then they can do that in their lunch break which would be supervised by teachers.

‘They walk up to Saumarez Park and they eat their lunch on the move.’

Mr Lee said there are also girl-only table tennis games at lunchtime where students can play while eating their lunch with friends.

He added that the school has established that the ‘top-down approach’ of teachers dictating to students does not always work, especially when it comes to physical activity, so they have tried to listen to and accommodate students’ requests.
