But the Dairy has said this was necessary to sell all the stocks.

Meanwhile, farmer James Watts has called for the price of local butter to go up to keep track with other brands.

Dairy general manager Andrew Tabel said it relied on the export market to ensure it sold all the butter that was produced.

‘It is also an important source of revenue, and we cannot compromise it by switching supply on and off at will,’ he said.

‘However, we do take a pragmatic and commercial view when demand exceeds supply, so in recent months we have been fulfilling orders in reduced quantities in an attempt to better maintain local availability.'

Guernsey Farmers Association spokesman Mr Watts said research showing that butter was not unhealthy had fuelled the rise in worldwide demand.

He felt that local prices had not kept up with rising UK ones, making it very attractive locally and abroad.
