Compulsory election voting idea being considered

PEOPLE could be forced to the ballot box through a requete being brought by two deputies.

The requete will suggest either the implementation of compulsory voting or automatic registration to the electoral roll, in an attempt to increase the number of voters in elections.

Barry Paint and Lester Queripel put forward the idea on the BBC Guernsey phone-in.

Now Deputy Paint has said he is investigating the idea further around the States in preparation for putting the requete together.

The plans are just some of the steps being taken to try and ease increasing voter apathy with the States.

Deputy Paint said the idea of compulsory voting could solve the problem, and was something many other countries have done.
