Sure and JT have interpreted differently the results of a review carried out for the regulator.

The Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities commissioned consultancy firm Regulaid to conduct the review of 4G coverage and download speeds across the Channel Islands.

It concluded that the islands’ 4G services are ‘on par with some of the best performing UK cities’ and produced comparative figures for download and upload speeds.

Sure CEO Ian Kelly said their customers’ mobile internet use had ‘rocketed’ since the launch of 4G.

‘Sure’s 4G and 4G+ networks are the result of a multi-million pound investment made to equip the islands with an infrastructure that enables them to punch well above their weight when it comes to superfast mobile services,’ he said.

Cicra’s findings back up Sure’s investment commitment, he added.

JT’s corporate affairs director Daragh McDermott believed this conclusion was inaccurate.

He pointed to JT’s higher upload speeds.

‘We were surprised to see Sure jump on this one result to allege that they have the fastest network, which I think carries a very serious risk of misleading customers,’ he said.

Airtel was approached for comment in response to the report, but has not done so.
