Mud brings extra realism to trench dig

THE digging of a replica First World War trench by secondary school pupils took on extra level of reality yesterday as heavy rain turned the ground to mud.

The trench, being dug at Home Farm field, marks the centenary of the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry fighting the Battle of Cambrai.

Yesterday, a group of Year 9 St Sampson’s history students were continuing the dig.

‘It’s been great fun so far, though everything is very muddy because of the rain yesterday,’ Elle Murphy, 14, said.

St Sampson’s head of history, Chris Murphy, said from a history teacher’s perspective, the experience for his students was invaluable.
