Alderney to upgrade power plant

ALDERNEY ELECTRICITY’S new power station will pave the way for green energy to enter the grid.

Alderney Electricity's current power station.

All Alderney’s electricity is currently generated by diesel, which is shipped to the island.

It will continue to be so, but waste heat from new, modern engines will bring in some renewable energy.

AEL’s power station at Crabby produces electricity from several ageing generators and dates back to the 1950s.

The States of Alderney has agreed to lend AEL £1.4m. to cover the upgrade, to be paid back through efficiency savings.

The new power station will see the installation of eight smaller generators, which will be lower maintenance and better able to respond to fluctuating needs.
