Our breakwater is not a folly, says Alderney rep

The comments came from Alderney representative Graham McKinley after E&I’s president, Deputy Barry Brehaut, speaking at a Scrutiny hearing, touched on the cost of maintaining Alderney’s breakwater, some £400,000 per year and said the structure was ‘something of a folly’.

The States has spent £23m. in 30 years on repairs.

Environment president Deputy Barry Brehaut said at the hearing that the level of investment on Alderney’s Victorian Breakwater – some £400,000 per year – was ‘something of a folly’.

Mr McKinley said it was vital that Guernsey continued to maintain the structure’s entire length.

‘I was a little surprised about some of the comments Deputy Brehaut made, talking about the breakwater as a folly.

‘I think that the breakwater is one of the most essential parts of our infrastructure here in Alderney.'
