‘Education wrong on post-16 plans’

HARDLY any staff at the Guernsey College of Further Education are in support of Education’s post-16 proposals, according to a survey released by their union.

Education’s reform plans have also come under scrutiny from the local branch of the National Education Union, whose secretary said ‘almost nothing had changed’ since members raised ‘profound concerns’ to the draft proposals.

Following the publication of Education’s policy letter earlier this month, the local branch of the University & College Union, to which the CFE staff belong, surveyed them about it.

Education wants to create a sixth-form centre incorporating all full-time academic and vocational studies, and a higher and further education institute for part-time, work-related studies and apprenticeships.

Branch secretary Dan Hunter said the feedback from College of FE staff had been almost unanimous.

‘The results of the survey align with the viewpoint expressed by the (shadow) board of governors in their open letter dated 9 November,’ he said, in a statement.

‘97.7% of GCFE staff were not in support of ESC’s proposals following the publication of their policy letter.’
