The volcano on Bali began erupting over the weekend, resulting in thousands of people being evacuated and forcing the closure of the island’s main international airport 70km away.

Thomas Ozanne, 39, has been visiting Indonesia for the last 10 years. He arrived in Bali last week to complete a trip which had been delayed by earlier volcanic activity.

He was staying in the town of Tulamben in the north-east of the island, which is famous for the wreck of the USAT Liberty that is just offshore.

He said quite a few of his friends were trying to leave Bali, but were stuck due to the airport closure.

‘They have had to resort to buses and ferries to the neighbouring island of Java,’ he said. ‘My flight out isn’t until mid-December so I’m going to wait and see what happens.’

Mr Ozanne posts his photographs on www.arewedreaming.com and www.instagram.com/arewedreaming.
