Losing Eisteddfod ‘would be nail in the coffin for performing arts’

TAKING part in the Eisteddfod is ‘a crucial educational experience’ that cannot be replicated in a classroom or practice hall, according to dance and theatre schools.

The organisers of the Guernsey Eisteddfod made a call for public support and sponsorship after they suffered a substantial loss at this year’s festival.

Avril Earl Dance & Theatre Arts Centre principal Avril Earl said it would be ‘a nail in the coffin for performing arts’ if the festival were to end.

‘The Eisteddfod is a hugely important part of our performing calendar,’ she said. ‘It is good for us to have a level our pupils have to be at, not just artistically but in terms of competence and their ability to work in a team.

‘The experience and exposure they get through the Eisteddfod is not something they can learn in a classroom.’
