La Mare – a school that rocks
TALENTED young actors and musicians at La Mare de Carteret High were gifted the rights to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock to perform the musical locally.
A matinee performance took place at the Princess Royal Centre for the Performing Arts on Thursday for the island’s primary school children, with two slots remaining for the public to see the show.
The musical – based on a 2003 film about an impostor supply teacher who teaches the children to love rock music – sends a good message about student-led learning, said drama and music teacher Dan Furness.
‘It’s about letting the kids play and getting them up there, it’s important in the curriculum – this also forms part of their music coursework for the year.’ he said.
The school’s all-girl band, who gig as Vice, feature heavily in the show. Singer Jessie Birch plays the lead character in the musical, Dewey Finn – the role made famous in the film by the actor Jack Black.
‘I think we’re the first production in the country to use a female Dewey,’ said Mr Furness.
There are performances today at 2 and 9pm. Tickets are available from https://www.guernseytickets.gg.
