A weather warning was in place for the Channel Islands shipping area yesterday, with west to north-westerly severe gale force 9 winds forecast, with gusts to 70mph.

Because of the strong wind forecast for today, Condor Liberation’s first day back in service has been affected.

She will leave Poole an hour-and-three-quarters later than planned, the timings meaning that all day trips were cancelled.

In Alderney, a 50-year-old sycamore tree blew down in the 60mph gales on Wednesday night.

It meant the Vallee Road was shut yesterday, close to the centre of St Anne’s.

The Alderney States Works Department crew and local tree surgeon Simeon Francis worked to clear the tree, which created a hole in the bakery roof.

A 1.3 Suzuki van owned by Alderney Accommodation was crushed by the fall.

The Jersey Met Office forecast said that it will remain very windy and showery for much of Friday. Into the weekend the winds will ease and we will lose the showers.
