‘Back to drawing board on post-16’

EDUCATION will go back to the drawing board and redesign its future post-16 model alongside those providing it, if an amendment by the committee’s former vice-president is successful.

Carl Meerveld, seconded by Deputy Peter Ferbrache, is calling for January’s debate on the future of education to focus on the committee’s proposals for three secondary schools.

If approved by the States, it instructs Education to form a working party including providers to co-design a post-16 model, with a policy letter being returned to the Assembly by March 2019.

The committee’s recommended post-16 model would see a sixth form centre operate from the Les Varendes site and a further education institute at Les Ozouets.

However, these propositions will be withdrawn if Deputy Meerveld’s amendment is accepted.

He wants to put all options back on the table, including attaching sixth form centres to none or all of the new secondary schools.
