Four 4kg turkeys, and whole sacks of potatoes, sprouts and carrots were prepared and cooked to ensure everyone received a good meal.

Major Jamie Hill and his wife, Claire – also a Salvation Army major – organised the festive feast.

‘We’ve got the list of people together, and organised the transport,’ he said.

‘Volunteers from the community have helped with transporting people to and from us – they dropped people off, have gone home for their family lunch, and then they’ll come back later to take people home.

Win Symons was one of those enjoying the festivities.

‘I came here last year too,’ said Mrs Symons.‘It was really very nice – it’s much better than having Christmas on your own.’

Pat Hooper has been coming to the Salvation Army lunch for three years.

‘It’s such a lovely day,’ she said. ‘The band were playing earlier and they were very good. I’m looking forward to a lovely lunch.’
